Class Reflection #4
Last week my friend Sandy came to my classroom observations with me. She needed to observe an elementary classroom for one of her classes at Cascadia community college. It was fun to have Sandy there with me. We sat in the back for a little while and listened to the second graders have their conversatons. It was a hoot. We sadly noticed that kids as young as 7 years old already set up a social heirarchal system. There are definatly the popular kids in the class that everyone wants to hang out with. I think it is so apart of our human nature to place people in our own made up social catagories. Its sad to see that kids already do this at such a young age though! It just makes me look in awe and wonder at Jesus even more. He never did this to anyone. He looked at all people with real love and real equality. THere was no popularity contests for him. Unlike us, he never placed people in social categories based on worth. He is antithetical to what we are. Yet he still loves us! Pretty cool guy that Jesus.

I see this in my class as well. It makes me to feel the need talk to only the "outcasts" in the class, but I have to be fair to all. Its a challenge. I feel for those those little guys. There is a girl in my class that never has a partner because everyone chooses other people over her. This happens every time. I watch her walk around desperately searching for someone, but in the end the teacher has to assign her to a group as the third wheel. I wish I could say that I would be her partner, but of course I can't. It's strange how social dynamics are complex even at a young age! Sorry for the novel, but you got me thinking.
